Update on Toy Purge

During Advent I wrote about doing a Toy Purge. E chose to give away many nice toys on December 18th. We talked about his decision leading up to Christmas. After that he didn't mention it at all.

Toys he chose to give away.

Until April 2nd... he then randomly mentioned the remote control car that he chose to give away (beside the teddy bear ball) and that he was sad he couldn't play with it. He wasn't showing any other signs of upset and quickly moved on to something else.

Fast forward to Easter Sunday (April 16th). He loved his Easter present of the Playmobil Recycling Truck, I got on Varage Sale for super cheap. However he had SUCH a hard time going to bed and was up leaving his room constantly until around 10:15pm when he finally fell asleep. I must have helped him back in to bed no fewer than 50 times.
One time he was so sneaky and quietly snuck downstairs, picked up the truck and quietly brought it to his room, silently closed the door, turned on the light and started playing. Oh man! It was a long evening.

All this to bring us to Easter Monday, when he told Andrew in a very serious tone that he "never wanted to give his truck away to other kids".  I love that months later this is still something on his mind but want him to know he makes the choice.

Other than setting out a bunch of toys he didn't play with much, I really didn't influence his choices in December. But this reinforces for me just how important it is for him to have the power by making the choices for himself! I can remind him that he was able to choose. Hopefully he feels secure in knowing that I won't just be giving away his toys (especially his favourites!).
