World Refugee Day
Things to do today that can make a difference for people fleeing their home countries due to a well-founded fear of persecution (due to race, religion, nationality, or social/political affiliations):
1. Learn about Canada's detention centres.
2. Email your MP and the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, ask how child detention in Canada works and what's being done to change it so that children are not detained in prison-like detention centres in Canada (or on any land off the shores of Canada).
3. Help the situation in the US by signing a petition to the Prime Minister/MPs to end the Safe Third Country agreement Canada has with the US. This will allow people in the US to come to Canada to put forward their asylum claim even though they've travelled through the States.

4. Join the Canadian Council for Refugees and the Citizens for Public Justice in urging the Canadian Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to increase funding for legal aid for refugee claimants (asylum seekers) in Canada.
5. Donate/volunteer with local organizations that support refugees.
6. Find somewhere that is holding World Refugee Day events and join in!
World Refugee 2018 Waterloo Region events
7. Learn more about the number and flow of refugees around the world.
