Potty Training Essentials

1. A Potty or Two
I've read (and it was recommended by E's urologist) to use a small potty. It especially helps them to be able to poop on the potty, since their knees are in a better position to push. Constipation is the enemy.

We have this Munchkin Arm & Hammer potty (above) and a potty from Ikea. Both seem equally fine and haven't noticed any issues of E peeing over the side or front of the potty. Wanted one for both bathrooms.

2. Travel Potty Seat with Handles
As we got more confident that E could manage in public, we needed something for him to sit on so we didn't have to hold him from falling in.

This seat folds to fit in a large ziploc bag and has somewhere for them to put their hands that isn't a public toilet. It fits better on some public toilets if you lift the seat up.

3. Leg Warmers (and a spare on hand)
We love our babylegs. I got a bunch for a really good deal ($2 a pair) and have used them since E was a baby - under clothes in the winter, with just a diaper and a onesie and now for potty training.

E wore just a long sleeved shirt and leg warmers in the initial stages of training (it was winter).

4. Underwear (10 pair)
Initially I had E go bare-bummed but showed him the underwear to get him excited. Once in underwear I found 10 pair enough between laundry days.

5. Potty Training Books
There are only two books I think you should own (or borrow for a long time).

Love Daniel Goes to the Potty book - has a great song that child can learn/sing about stopping to go potty right away. Also has a button to that sounds like a toilet flushing.

Sesame Street P is for Potty book with lift-the-flaps was sufficiently long and gave E something to do while he was waiting to pee/poop.

Check your local library for other potty books, variety keeps them interested.

6. Diapers/Training Pants for Naps/Bed Time
At the beginning I wouldn't change your nap or bed time diapering solution. Eventually I would switch to cloth diapers (if you aren't already) or thick training pants.

7. Baby Wipes
You will need plenty of wipes around while training. Wiping down legs and especially for cleaning poopy bums!

8. Pee Pads
Perfect for in the car seat! Not that you'll need 100, but these disposable changing pads are the cheapest I found - split them with some friends? You can also buy puppy pee pads, or check the dollar store baby section.

9. Paper Towels/Cloth Wipes/Old Dish Cloths & cleaner
For the floor you will need to have a small container of paper towels, cloths, and all-purpose cleaner. Keep it handy!
