Potty Training 2.0 Success!

I followed the basics from the series I put together previously.

  1. Plan 3 days naked at home.
  2. Made a potty fort.
  3. Positive language, noticing queues and verbalizing them but trying not to ask the question "Do you need to pee/poop/go potty?" directly.
  4. Didn't start with a reward system except for the ability to flush the toilet and then wear underwear after a few days.
  5. We stuck with diapers for naps/night time initially.

Challenges
AGE: T was a bit older (3 years, 1 month) than E was when we started potty training for a few reasons (hearing limitations, lack of ability verbalize a lot, busy summer schedule).
ATTITUDE: Because of this he was not only older but also hitting the three year old phase of obstinacy and refusal. So we really had to watch our wording and allow accidents to happen even when we had predicted they would.

Successes
T took a few days to pick up his body queues for pee but once he did we were able to transition to pants (commando) and then underwear/pants with no accidents.
Able to reassure T during the first poop on the potty and he's since been able to transition from needing to hold someone's hand to walk to the potty to poop and sit there and have a back rubbed and books read, to being able to have brother read to him, to being able to poop on the potty by himself!

Surprises
So we weren't planning on night/nap training T for a few months as we thought he'd take a bit to be spontaneously dry overnight (as we experienced with E). But that wasn't what T had in mind! 8 days in to potty training T was dry after nap and then dry the next morning! That continued for a a few days on the evening of day 12 of potty training we made the (somewhat crazy) decision not to diaper him for bed! And haven't looked back since!

New Suggestions
I put together a fairly exhaustive playlist of kids music featuring potty training, we listened to it non-stop for the first few days (I'm not exaggerating).

In addition to the Daniel Tiger and Elmo Lift-the-flap book I've previously recommended, T also really liked Potty Hero, it was a phrase that really worked for him (and is adorable to hear him tell people "I'm a potty hero!". We also got out about 10 other books from the library on the topic just for variety. Make sure to pre-read the books (or change the wording on the fly) so you're re-enforcing positive beliefs about potty training.
