Week 1 Recap: March Break and the New Normal

Physical (social) distancing: it's not awesome for extroverts like Andrew who thrive on social interactions, or anxious/claustrophobic people like me who do not like feeling closed in. Needless to say we're working on those feelings.

Thankfully our children are fairly young (3yo and 6yo) and aren't feeling particularly upset about having to stay home with their parents everyday (Andrew is working from home). Even though I'm sure they'd enjoying seeing friends it hasn't been something they've mentioned much yet.

Sunday March 15th

E had his final skating lesson of the season and then the rinks were closed the following day - so good timing on that one! He's really improved his ability in using both feet instead of doing a skateboard-like motion pushing off on one foot. Plus he has a lot of fun!

Andrew also biked with the boys to a deserted play ground (and kept mittens on), though now they've also been closed. However, E picked up biking where he left off last summer! No trouble at all.

Monday March 16th
The boys opened some new toys from the dollar store we'd bought to keep them busy over March Break and they were a big hit. It was also my brother's birthday so we had a good call with him in Winnipeg.

Tuesday March 17th
St. Patrick's Day was really fun at our house! We finished getting our play room tidied in preparation for our stay at home adventures. Did some St. Patty's crafts to hang in our front window including learning about and colouring the Irish flag and leprechauns and a giant bingo-dabbed rainbow.

The boys took turns doing a St. Patty's dice rolling math game and E did his first every decryption code of St. Patty's images tied to an alphabet which he enjoyed. Andrew made Irish Stew for dinner which was delicious!

Wednesday March 18th
Wednesday the boys spent hours the morning building and playing with the train tracks and for the first time ever T didn't destroy it. Eventually they switched to the Playmobil123 farm and that was the entire morning. I pulled out my DSLR camera and took some pics :)

In the afternoon E and I worked together on some math and practiced his glockenspiel. When T got up from nap the boys played outside for 1.5 hours, which was great!

Thursday March 19th
Andrew and the boys started the day off with a bike ride so I got some alone time and they all got some fresh air and exercise.

E worked on some crafts, including a wooden Christmas ornament he found on the shelf to paint. T spent a good hour or more shooting mini Thomas trains into a bucket (side effect of increased perseverance getting the train in the "shooter" as well as finger strength and spacial awareness).  Oh, and the lizard hatched!

We did a bit of organizing with the kid's games, which unsurprisingly has led to playing more games with the boys :)

Friday March 20th
It was a rainy morning (that melted the remaining snow), so we stayed in and played. We coloured silly faces to place in our front window. T is starting to get the hang of holding a crayon "properly" and E is experimenting with use of colour and is perfecting his scissor skills and use of light/hard pushing on crayons.

T got out the blocks to build castles and when E was done colouring he joined him. E also got out our velcro calendar and in order to work on French number skills I had him put on the numbers backwards. T got out the Mr. Potato Heads and worked independently on those.

It was a lot colder, but the boys were troopers and spent an hour in the backyard.

Saturday March 21st
Started my day off in the best way possible.

While T was napping, Andrew and I looked through some boxes we hadn't touched since we moved into this house (5 years ago). I pulled out 6 boxes of books to go through thoroughly next week. After T's nap we went on a walk in nearby Monarch Woods. It was busier than I would have liked, though easy enough to stay more than 2m away from other people.

E has started to enjoy taking photos too!
