Prepping for JK - Over the Summer
BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING
This may begin before the summer if you see any good sales, but you want to have the following a couple weeks before school starts:
FUN BOOKS & MAGAZINES
Get reading about school! Check out these books from your local library.
Work through a Chirp magazine about school! Perfect for kids starting either JK or SK. Current issues may be found at local stores that carry magazines. Our local library also carries recent issues of Chirp magazine.
GET UP TO DATE
Take your child to the doctor for a health check including any necessary vaccinations. Also visit the optometrist to check their vision. Solving any health problems before school will get your child on the right track for learning!
LEARN TO RIDE THE BUS
Our 2 local school boards put on a school bus training for first-time riders. A safety session followed by a practice ride on the bus! This was really helpful in getting E ready to ride the bus home. He now knows to expect the ride to be bumpy and to wait in his seat until he arrives at his stop and I ask the bus driver for him.
COMPLETE PAPERWORK
Our school sent home a Parent Questionnaire to be completed and returned during the first meeting. Our school has a staggered entry and kids/parents go for only a short meeting one of the first 2 days of school and then full day kindergarten begins over the first week for smaller groups of the JKs at a time. Consider any information you wish to share with teacher at the meeting (or before if necessary) and prepare a list of questions you want answered.
PREPARE FOR LUNCH
Think about the foods your child likes and can eat independently. Plan a number of options that will satisfy their hunger and follows any food restrictions your school might have. Our Region has prepared a helpful resource on packing school lunches. Check it out!
FREE PRINTABLE
Print out this check list for your little one and go through it with them before school starts.

Have your child practice eating at the times they will during school and opening their containers all on their own. Have them pack everything back into their lunchbox and back in their backpack. I found some containers E could easily open and close at Dollarama if your child is struggling with the more expensive kind that comes with the lunch bag.
