Magic School Bus Rides Again Birthday Party
We had E's birthday party before we left on a trip, so it was important to have everything well-planned. This year instead of doing one party (with family and friends) we had a kids only party in the morning and over lunch with school, church, and other friends and then starting at 4:30pm we had family over (with a few family friends). So this was really two parties.
Invitation:
Decorations:
Decor was super easy for this party! When Netflix rebooted Magic School Bus, they "threw" a Rides Again reboot party and have a ton of free printables available. Check out below for examples of how we used the printables as well as how we kicked it up a notch.
My mom had science-themed decorations from a summer camp so we hung a few of them from the ceiling and added a few bunches of yellow and black balloons. At the front foyer I set up a borrowed school bus tent and put out Magic School Bus books I'd borrowed from the library.
Food:
In the evening we chose to do burgers/portobello mushrooms as the main with fancy toppings (grated beets, guacamole, havarti or cheddar cheese) and my mom made a couple potato salads. (No photos)
I am glad the Netflix party included printable cupcake wrappers and toppers as I'm not the most accomplished baker and they certainly spruced up the cupcakes.
Activities:
I had three main science experiments planned for the friends party. Walking rainbow, tornado in a jar, and slime (which was a failed experiment this time).
In between activites the kids piled in to our Magic School Bus in the front foyer, I played the theme song to the TV show and then chatted a bit about the science behind the next experiment.
Favours:
We simply packaged up the tornado and failed slime experiments with a test tube of nerds and some yellow and black off-brand legos (to build a bus) as well as a glow in the dark sticky star (hold one end, throw to stick other end at wall). Everything was put in a brown paper bag with little themed tags I made from the Netflix printables.
For the family party we just stapled the legos and sticky star together with their Thanks! tag and handed it to them with their take-home flower experiment seen below. I bought individual flower water holders (like roses or hydrangeas would come with) from our local grocery store so the kids could easily take home a white carnation in water with food colouring.

Food:
This was the spread for the kids party. I made it such that the fruits, veggies, and cupcake trays were all easily re-fillable for our evening family party. I also decided on hands-only food for the kids party, pizza is always a hit.

During the family party we had didn't have time for long experiments so we used this volcano kit and did the baking soda/vinegar experiment. The kids all took turns, it was messy and fun and vinegar may have hit the ceiling :)
